3. Justification in the curriculum, relation to other subjects and to the profession
This subject, Theory of Journalism, is carried out in the first semester of the 1st year of the degree and belongs to the field of Theory of Communication and Journalistic Information. The main objective of this subject is that the students become familiar with the journalistic activity and the informative speech in general terms. This course provides students with a series of basic conceptual tools from which to address the understanding and assimilation of contemporary information processes and theoretical reflections on journalism.
According to the White Paper of the Degree in Communication (2004: 192), in the section on Journalism Studies, a subject such as Theory of Journalism contributes to the knowledge of the informative processes, as well as the main currents and theories approached from a conceptual, methodological and investigative point of view.
The subject to which this subject belongs includes four other subjects: Media Literacy, Communication Theory; Political Communication (2nd year) and Basic and applied research in communication (3rd year).
Journalism Theory tackles with issues such as the scientific perspective on journalism, the notion of news, production and journalistic routines, as well as aspects related to the social function of the journalistic profession, among others.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS, REMARKS
This teaching guide is conceived as a working tool, a planning proposed by the teacher of the subject but which, once the work and dialogue in the classroom has begun, should function as a living, modifiable and flexible instrument.
To this end, in the development of the subject there will be room for negotiation of its execution, which will take into account the needs, feelings, projects and expectations shared by the group (teacher-students) during the teaching-learning process. Reformulations, additions, etc. that may occur will be established throughout the course and will be set down in writing in the shared space of the virtual campus.
Students who are unable to attend classes will be facilitated to follow the course through the virtual campus, raising doubts through the forum and requesting individual or group tutorials to reinforce the reading of those texts or topics that are more complicated or that have been incorporated as new material to the syllabus.

According to art. 4 of the UCLM Student Evaluation Regulations, it must be provided to students who cannot regularly attend face-to-face training activities the passing of the subject, having the right (art. 12.2) to be globally graded, in 2 annual calls per subject , an ordinary and an extraordinary one (evaluating 100% of the competences).
Evaluation criteria for the final exam:

Continuous assessment:In the event that the final exam does not reach 4 -since it cannot be averaged with the rest of the grades of the course-, even if the final calculation exceeds 5, the grade of the minutes will be a 4.5.
Any student may change to the non-continuous evaluation modality as long as he/she has not participated during the period of classes in evaluable activities that represent at least 50% of the total evaluation of the subject. If a student has reached that 50% of evaluable activities or if, in any case, the class period has ended, he/she will be considered in continuous evaluation without the possibility of changing the evaluation mode.
This planning may be adapted and undergo slight modifications in case any extraordinary measure related to the COVID-19 health pandemic is undertaken. However, even in an unforeseen scenario, we will try to maintain the evaluation percentages with the maximum fidelity to what is indicated in this guide.
This subject will apply the evaluation criteria agreed upon in the UCLM Evaluation Regulations, as well as the specific evaluation rules approved by the Faculty Board of the center. -
Non-continuous evaluation:In the event that the final exam does not reach 4 -since it cannot be averaged with the rest of the grades of the course-, even if the final calculation exceeds 5, the grade of the minutes will be a 4.5.
The non-continuous evaluation will be through a final test where there will be a part of theoretical aspects (35%) and finally a practical part (35%). In addition, the student will have to present one week before the final exam all the obligatory works, which will have a value of 30% of the final grade.
Specifications for the resit/retake exam:
In the retake exam the student will be examined in a final test of everything seen in class and in the course. The same criteria will be applied as in the ordinary exam. The test will consist of a current events test, readings, theory and practice. The student will have to submit all the compulsory assignments not handed in or failed.
The grade of the practical work, carried out in the classroom, if it exceeds 4, will average with the grade of the final exam taken in the extraordinary exam. And likewise, if the final exam is passed with a 5 in the ordinary exam, in the extraordinary exam only the practical work will have to be recovered, by means of an exercise that will be carried out on the day of the extraordinary exam. In the case that the final exam does not reach the 4, given that it will not be possible to make average with the rest of subjet, even if the final calculation exceeds 5, the grade will be 4.5.
