2. Pre-Requisites

The student must have passed the course unit Foreign Language and itsTeaching II: English from the second year of the Degree of Teacher in Early Childhood Education.

3. Justification in the curriculum, relation to other subjects and to the profession

Society nowadays requires citizens able to be competent in at least a foreign language. The beginning of the teaching of English as a foreign language in the second cycle of Early Childhood Education seems to respond to that social requirement. The minor in English in the Degree of Teacher in Early Childhood Education leads to the acquisition of the theoretical and practical training which are necessary for the teaching of English in Early Childhood.
Education. Furthermore, this course unit contributes to achieving new educational requirements such as plurilingualism, interculturalism, ICT, and critical thinking. Competences gather around two blocks: language and didactics. This course unit is framed into the former and is aimed at strengthening and consolidating the communicative skills in the B2 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

8. Evaluation criteria and Grading System
Evaluation System Continuous assessment Non-continuous evaluation * Description
Progress Tests 20.00% 20.00% Progress tests assessing the different communicative skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, dictation and writing. Similar in format and level to the ones of the final test. Their dates will be previously announced in Moodle. The progress tests can be retaken in the written test of the extraordinary call.
Final test 70.00% 70.00% Written and oral exams. The written text will consist of the following sections: listening comprehension (30/100); reading comprehension (20/100); use of English: grammar and vocabulary (20/100); writing (30/100). The student must get at least 40 (out of 100) to average with the oral exam.
The oral exam will take place later for those students (whose mark in the written one is at least 40) who have got less than 4 in the oral section in class throughout the semester. The oral exam will consist of two parts: reading a text aloud and take part in a conversation with two examiners. A minimun mark of 4 (out of 10) is required to average with the written exam.
The final test, in each of its parts, can be retaken in the extraordinary call.
Oral presentations assessment 10.00% 10.00% Oral presentation in cooperative work groups on any of the topics deal with in the semester.
The oral presentation cannot be retaken.
Total: 100.00% 100.00%
According to art. 4 of the UCLM Student Evaluation Regulations, it must be provided to students who cannot regularly attend face-to-face training activities the passing of the subject, having the right (art. 12.2) to be globally graded, in 2 annual calls per subject , an ordinary and an extraordinary one (evaluating 100% of the competences).

Evaluation criteria for the final exam:
  • Continuous assessment:
To pass this course unit the student must get at least 5 (out of 10) after having added all the percentages established in the evaluation system.
The written exam averages with the oral one (and viceversa) if the mark is at least 4 (out of 10). In any case, as said above, the minimum mark to pass this course is 5 (out of 10).
The student can pass the oral section in two different ways:
    a) Those students who regularly attend the lessons and demonstrate that they are competent and fluent in English: if their oral mark is equal to or above 5 or get at least 4 (out of 10), the mimimun to average with the written section.
    b) Those students who do not regularly attend classes or have not reached the minimum mark of 4 will have to sit for the oral exam after the written one (if their mark is at least 4 in that exam).
The progress tests or the oral presentation cannot be repeated. Those students who have not done or failed any of the progress activities will have the opportunity to retake them in the written section of the extraordinary call. The oral presentation in cooperative groups cannot be retaken.
If a fraudulent practice is detected in the evaluation test carried out by a student, the exam will result into failure, with a final grade of zero (0) in the corresponding course.
The detection by the teacher that an assignment, essay or similar test has not been prepared by the student will result in a numerical grade of zero (0) both in the tests and in the course in which it has been detected, regardless of the rest of the grades obtained by the student. (See Article 8 of the UCLM Student Assessment Regulations)."
Grammatical and expression mistakes will be penalised in all kinds of activities to be performed by the student. For every mistake of those included in the list "Mistakes to avoid" (see Moodle), the student will miss 0.25 points in the corresponding activity up to a maximum of 3 points (12 mistakes). If the mistake is repeated, the repetition(s) will be also penalised.
  • Non-continuous evaluation:
On the same day as the final exam, non-continuous evaluation students will take a test on the communicative skills in which the percentage equivalent to the progress tests (20%) is included. That percentage can be retaken in the final written test of the extraordinary call.
These students will also have to do an individual oral presentation (10%) on a date arranged between them and the professor. This presentation cannot be retaken.
The percentages of both activities (up to 30%) will be added to the global mark if the student has passed the final test.
Those students who decide to take the non-continuos evaluation model must inform the professor about that decision within the first four weeks of the academic year.

Specifications for the resit/retake exam:
If a student has reached the minimum mark of 4 (out of 10) in any of the sections (oral or written), that mark will be maintained for the extraordinary call and will average with the mark in the other section.
For continuos evaluation students, the percentage obtained in the progress tests will be maintained only if the student has passed the final test and if it is beneficial for the student.
Evaluation criteria applied in the ordinary call are still valid.
Specifications for the second resit / retake exam:
The second resit exam will consist of a written exam (50%) and an oral one (50%). The minimum mark required in each section for the average mark is 4 (out of 10). In any case, the mark to pass the resit exam is 5 (out of 10).
All evaluation criteria are still valid.
