2. Pre-Requisites

In order to be in group B, in which not only this course but all of them will be fully taught in English, students must certify at least a B1 level, or pass a level test at the Faculty to prove they have it.

3. Justification in the curriculum, relation to other subjects and to the profession

Training in English language and methodology for young learners is essential for student teachers due to the importance given to the foreign language subject in Primary Education together with the emergence of new legislation concerning plurilingualism. In this sense, the course unit intends to delve into the practice of the five communicative skills of the English language to develop the communicative competence in English. Likewise, it intends to show methodological aspects and didactic implementations of the English language in Primary classrooms and teach the basic didactic principles for their future career as Primary teachers. The course unit Foreign Language and Teaching I: English is included in the Module 1.1.4 (Basic Training in Foreign Language).

5. Objectives or Learning Outcomes
Course learning outcomes
Description
Be able to make simple oral descriptions of a wide range of topics of interest to them.
Understand the key ideas of an oral discourse in standard language dealing with daily-life topics, such as work, school, leisure time, etc.
Write simple and coherent texts about a series of everyday topics of interest to them by using different brief elements in a linear sequence.
Orally communicate and interact with a certain degree of confidence, by participating in unannounced conversations dealing with everyday topics, express personal opinions and exchange information about common, personal or everday topics.

Read written texts about particular facts that deal with topics related to their specialty at a satisfactory level of comprehension.

8. Evaluation criteria and Grading System

Portfolio assessment 0.00% 15.00% Teaching practice for non continuous evaluation to be done on the day of the exam. It will be necessary to get at least 4/10.
Progress Tests 35.00% 0.00% 20% in 1B. Assessable progress tests along the year. They will be specified by the teacher at the beginning of the academic year. These marks will be added once the students have passed both the written and oral exams. This mark will only be taken into account if beneficial for the student. Otherwise, this percentage will go to the final exam.
Final test 65.00% 80.00% 65% in 1B
The final exam will consist of: I. a written exam, including Reading comprehension, Writing, Use of English (grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary) and Listening (which might include a dictation); and II. an oral exam, including both speaking
production and speaking interaction for those who have not passed it by means of class participation. Students who take part on a regular basis along the academic year and get at least 4/10 will pass the oral section this way. It is necessary to pass the teaching section first with its corresponding projects, so students with non-continous evaluation will have 80% of their mark with this final exam and 20% with the teaching projects (and will need at least 4/10 in each activity).
Fieldwork assessment 0.00% 5.00% Students will be required to prepare materials for a Primary school. It will be required to get at least 4/10.

According to art. 4 of the UCLM Student Evaluation Regulations, it must be provided to students who cannot regularly attend face-to-face training activities the passing of the subject, having the right (art. 12.2) to be globally graded, in 2 annual calls per subject , an ordinary and an extraordinary one (evaluating 100% of the competences).

Evaluation criteria for the final exam:
  • Continuous assessment:
    The remaining 15% in 1ºB will be marks corresponding to the school projects related to the Teaching section. It will be necessary to have at least 4/10.
    Information for every call
    - If needed, any change or adaptation of the eguides due to circumstances derived from the evolution of the pandemic will be documented by means of an addendum.
    - For every evaluation activity it will necessary to get at least 4/10 to be taken into account for the final mark.
    - In order to pass the course, the average mean of every evaluation activity will be at least 5/10.
    - It will be necessary to pass the three parts of the course: didactics, oral and written exam.
    - If a student fails Didactics, the written exam will not be checked and their final mark will be 3 by default. If a student fails the oral section, the final mark will be 4 by default. If a student fails the written exam, that mark will be the final one.
    - It will be possible to pass the oral section by means of repeated participation in class at the required level.
    - If a student passes only one or two of the sections in the ordinary call, their marks will be kept for the extraordinary call.
    - No marks will be kept for further calls.
    - At the beginning of the academic year, a list of basic errors will be uploaded to Moodle. Every time one of these errors is produced, the mark will be penalized with -0'25 up to a total of -3, even if it is repeated. This will be applied to every piece of oral or written production.
    - Plagiarism or any kind of academic fraud in any evaluation activity will lead to the consequences foreseen in the art. 9 of the REE regulating Student Evaluation in UCLM. The mark for that activity will be 0/10.
  • Non-continuous evaluation:
    Students will be required to prepare materials for a real school.
    The other considerations of the continuous assessment will apply to them.
