3. Justification in the curriculum, relation to other subjects and to the profession

Specialised journalistic communication, or specialised journalism, has gradually established itself as a branch of journalism that is defined by its subject matter as much as by its methodology. Although the debate on its academic characterisation is still open, there is consensus regarding the close relationship that this journalism maintains with scientific issues and with the strategies for their adequate transmission. There is also agreement that specialised journalism requires not only a mastery of the field of knowledge in question and, therefore, a complementary training to that of purely communication, but also a special relationship with sources, work routines and even a different attitude towards information itself.

Vehiculated through its own sections in general information dailies, weeklies or audiovisual programmes, specialised journalism has the duty to contextualise and disseminate specific knowledge of general interest, thus promoting the democratisation of knowledge. In an apparently paradoxical way, specialised journalism contributes to reducing the effect of the excess of specialisation in today's world by disseminating and giving transversality to specialised knowledge.
