To take this subject, no prerequisites are required, but the experience and training acquired by the student in the first semesters of the Degree will be considered, since concepts presented during the previous stages of their academic training will be expanded. It is advisable to be proficient in handling software as word processors and spreadsheets, and to be accustomed to using bibliography in another language (especially English or French).
Contribution to the curriculum. The subject Geography of the Contemporary City has a mandatory character (with 6 ECTS credits) within the Degree in Humanities and Social Studies. Cities and urban life are key elements to understand contemporary society, because they reflect their socioeconomic and environmental characteristics. The explanation of the changes that affect them are framed in three axes: globalization, inequalities of the current world and environmental crisis. This subject completes the multidisciplinary training of graduates.
Relationship with other matters. It is assigned to the Department of Geography and Territorial Planning, (in the field of Human Geography). It is closely related to the subjects of the same area and also to others in the discipline. Geography of Contemporary City contributes with them to add the spatial dimension in a curriculum focused on humanistic and social disciplines. It will be applied methods, techniques and concepts developed throughout the previous two years, especially skills and abilities acquired in basic subjects such as Geography and Society, or mandatory as Geography of the Developed World and Inequalities and Geography of Globalization. It also has correspondences with Geography of Spain and Castilla-La Mancha, although its spatial scope exceeds that of this subject. On the other hand, given the complexity of the urban phenomenon today, which is composed of multiple facets that can be studied from different points of view (historical, artistic, anthropological ...), it establishes connections with other subjects such as History or History of Art. This justifies carrying out coordinated activities with subjects from these fields in the same course (workshops or joint seminars).
