2. Pre-Requisites

As the course is taught entirely in English, it is advised that students start with at least an A2 level within the European Common Framework.

3. Justification in the curriculum, relation to other subjects and to the profession

This course tackles theoretical terms in the English language around the fields of grammar, writing devices and speaking strategies. It carries on with the projects started in the course "Inglés con Fines Académicos," specializing this time in specific methodologies to work in the areas that form the base of the Degree in Humanities and Social Sciences. Hence, the student learns to use the English language in the fields of Geography, History, and Arts. The target level is the European Reference Framework's B1.

5. Objectives or Learning Outcomes
Course learning outcomes
Description
Automation of basic phonetic elements as a mean for a better comprehension and expression.
Reinforcement of oral comprehension in order to strengthen expression skills and abstract thought.
Better fluidity in dialogues.
Awareness of the importance of the different linguistic skills when facing the job market.
Increase of reading skills through professional, scientific, cultural texts.
Improvement of written skills in order to produce academic texts, presentations, communications and different kinds of correspondence (e-mail, fax, letters, etc.).
Development of comprehension and expression skills (both written and oral) from A2 to B1.
Familiarization with the usage of ICTs in relation with the linguistic development of the student.

According to art. 4 of the UCLM Student Evaluation Regulations, it must be provided to students who cannot regularly attend face-to-face training activities the passing of the subject, having the right (art. 12.2) to be globally graded, in 2 annual calls per subject , an ordinary and an extraordinary one (evaluating 100% of the competences).

Evaluation criteria for the final exam:
  • Continuous assessment:
    There will be an exam with three parts in which the student must show the ability to perform any of the tasks: formation of a text, oral presentation of a topic, and literary analysis.
    How to change from continuous to non-continuous evaluation: any student may change from one system to the other if he/she has not fulfilled up to a 50% of the continuous evaluation tasks during the academic period. If a student has already fulfilled the 50% of the evaluable tasks, or if the lesson period has already finished, he/she will not be allowed to change the evaluation system.
  • Non-continuous evaluation:
    Students will take an exam (70%) and must hand in a portfolio with the activities done throughout the term.
    How to change from continuous to non-continuous evaluation: any student may change from one system to the other if he/she has not fulfilled up to a 50% of the continuous evaluation tasks during the academic period. If a student has already fulfilled the 50% of the evaluable tasks, or if the lesson period has already finished, he/she will not be allowed to change the evaluation system.
