3. Justification in the curriculum, relation to other subjects and to the profession

"History of Modern Art" (Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism) is an essential part of our culture; we confront it when we travel, visit museums, monuments, and, therefore, beyond academic achievements, it has a very specific application for a better understanding of the world around us.

The subject of History of Modern Art (2nd year, 1st semester) is included in a sequential learning structure of the History of Art in the Degree in Humanities and Social Studies; previously the student has taken the course "History of Ancient and Medieval Art" (1st year, 2nd semester) and later his training is completed with the courses "History of Contemporary Art" (2nd year, 2nd semester), "History of Spanish Art" (3rd year, 5th semester) and "Sources and Methodology of Art History" (3rd year, 6th semester) course), all of them obligatory.

Through these subjects the student receives a basic training in History of Art to achieve the compulsory skills to become a teacher of Art History in secondary education; this training in Art History is fundamental for other professional opportunities in the field of tourism and heritage management.

At the same time, the student studies other subjects in History and Literature to receive a more complete training both for the historical contextualization of the History of Art and for the knowledge of literary sources.

Course learning outcomes
Description
Make the student familiar with Art general language and terminology in order to apply them with rigour and to be able to express themselves with confidence.
To acquaint the student with the main works, the different formal and visual languages, the different art techniques, the characteristics, functions and essential pillars of the History of Universal Art in its diachronic and synchronic aspects: in its forms within the framework of the different cultures, as well as the main causes of those characteristics, functions and evolution, linking the art work with the social, economic, political, ideological, religious and individual context where it was originated, and connecting it with other cultural ways of expression.
Make the student develop his analytical and critical spirit and his sensitivity to see and to ¿read¿ art works; to become used to read the language of their forms, to appreciate their aesthetic values and to draw conclusions on the culture that has generated them. An art work, apart from possessing its own intrinsic value, is an excellent way to understand and to appreciate mankind¿s past and the civilization that created it.
Prepare the student to apply the knowledge acquired to specific cases through direct contact with the works on visits to museums, exhibitions or monuments.
To make the student aware of the necessity of training himself in different interdisciplinary fields, in the command of oral and written expression in his own language, in other foreign languages, in the use of computer tools and in the command of nets to stablish national and international contacts.
Provide the student with an interdisciplinary vision of the arts.
