There is no prerequisite to curse this subject.The experience and training of the student acquired in previous years will be considered, since a series of concepts wil be developed throughout the course that will have been learned during the previos stages of thir academic training. It is recommended that the student be familiar with computer programs, for which a certain skills is required in the handling of word processors and Excel spreadsheets, as wel as browsing throught the Internet.
The subject Geography and Society belongs to the branch of knowledge of the Social Sciences. It is part of the Department of Geography and Lan Use Planning whose presence in the curriculum gives it some basic, compulsory and optional subjects. In this case, the nature of this subject corresponds to basic training, with a teaching load of 6 ECTS credits. This subject is proposed along with other subjects of this same nature of basic training with the aim of offering a fundamental training in the degree. It is intended that the student acquires the fundamental bases of the geographical discipline. The understanding of the main concepts and the search, analysis and interpretation of data through various sources will make the student acquire skills for further application in other subjects and their future professional career.
Relationship with other subjects: The subjects taught in the Department of Geography and Land Use Planning have a logical sequencing throughout the Degree in Humanities and Social Studies. During the first year of the Degree, we start by teaching subjects with a methodological and conceptual nature whose nature has a basic training in this subject and Geography and Environment. The methods, techniques and concepts developed throughout this first course are those that will have their application in subjects that are developed in more advanced courses of the degree, for which it will be necessary to have correctly understood the theoretical and methodological bases of this discipline. In the following years the acquired knowledge, skills and abilities will have their application in certain territories that go from our closest environment (Spain and Castilla-La Mancha) to some more distant (Latin America). The instrumental, methodological and conceptual nature of this subject makes it useful with the rest of the subjects of the degree, whether basic, compulsory or optional. The knowledge of this subject has application in other subjects of the curriculum, in addition to those taught by the Department of ascription of the subject, such as those belonging to the departments of History or Philosophy.
The theoretical nature of this subject is complemented by practices. For that, it is necessary to acquire a series of skills and abilities such as the use of information and communication technologies to produce information from various statistical sources or use an appropriate language in oral and written form that they will use in the future labour market, whether as a teacher, archivist, librarian or staff assigned to research projects or international cooperation.
