2. REQUISITOS PREVIOS

As this is a 3rd-4th year ELECTIVE course, the appropriate level of English will be essential in order to complete the readings, follow the course, and pass the tests. The readings (primary and secondary), lessons, and exams will be exclusively in English, and indeed proficiency in English will be assessed as an important part of the final mark.

6. TEMARIO
  • Tema 1: Autobiography
    • Tema 1.1: Autobiography (i): Babylon Revisited
    • Tema 1.2: Autobiography (ii): In the Village
  • Tema 2: Fictionalized Biographies & Bildungsroman
    • Tema 2.1: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
    • Tema 2.2: Fight Club
  • Tema 3: Film Narration: theoretical foundations
  • Tema 4: Film Narration: examples in context
  • Tema 5: Novel-to-film adaptation: Fight Club
COMENTARIOS ADICIONALES SOBRE EL TEMARIO

I will provide digital copies of all required texts and secondary sources, but you are encouraged to purchase paper copies of primary sources.

Required readings include:

  • F. Scott Fitzgerald: "Babylon Revisited"
  • Elizabeth Bishop: "In the Village"
  • Junot Díaz: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
  • Chuck Palahniuk: Fight Club

This syllabus above looks very nice and tidy but it cannot be taught as is. Units 3 and 4 are actually taught as needed throughout the semester, typically in between literary readings to grant students extra time to catch up with their reading requirements.

On those sessions we'll discuss narration in film using theoretical texts and film excerpts brought to class by me. This is not for the sake of entertainment and you'll have to read quite a bit of bibliography and watch numerous clips to follow the theoretical discussion.

Films to be watched in part or in total and discussed in class include:

Short silent films by Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Battleship Potemkin, Drowning by Numbers, Amadeus, Miller's Crossing, Koyaanisqatsi, Triumph des Willens, Reservoir Dogs, Her, The Last Time I Saw Paris, The Hurt Locker, Annette, Being John Malkovich, Road to Perdition, American Beauty, The Party, Fight Club.

8. CRITERIOS DE EVALUACIÓN Y VALORACIONES
Sistema de evaluación Evaluacion continua Evaluación no continua * Descripción
Pruebas parciales 49.00% 0.00% Written exam, in class, during class hours on Thursday 14th December or Friday 15th so you'll have 90' to do it. No classnotes, no phones or any other digital media allowed
Prueba final 51.00% 100.00% Written exam, on a date pre-assigned by the Faculty, 2h, no classnotes, no phones or other digital media allowed.
Total: 100.00% 100.00%

    ACTIVITY 1. PRUEBA PARCIAL:
Written exam, in class, during class hours on Thursday 14th December or Friday 15th so you'll have ninety minutes to do it. No classnotes, no phones or any other digital media allowed.

    Weight: 49%

The following week you can have personalized feedback from me, and if you obtain a poor grade you're still in time to switch to "Evaluación no continua" because this is just 49% of the final mark.
Evaluation: Please see below (criteria are 100% the same as for final exam)

    ACTIVITY 2. FINAL EXAM:
Written exam, in January 2024 on a date and venue pre-assigned by the Faculty, 2 hours, no classnotes, no phones or other digital media allowed.

    Weight: 51%

For evaluation the following aspects will be considered:

Theoretical and practical knowledge of contents, organization, clarity, coherence, documentation, familiarity with the literary tradition, capacity for textual analysis, effective development of argument, use of data, originality, proper grammar, and presentation.
Of the greatest importance here is the concept of RELEVANCE to the questions asked, as no series of general statements on the literary works will do --no matter how very true they may be-- unless they directly address the questions asked of you.
In this regard, the directive "Analyze the following texts..." means ANALYZE and not PARAPHRASE, not SUMMARIZE.

PLEASE NOTE: under "originality" I mean the following considerations:

    - Wikipedia is not an academic source.
    - ChatGPT is not an academic source.
    - No single exam should make literal or even mildly paraphrased use of content available from any single source.

    THEREFORE

    - Essays featuring unreasonably large amounts of content borrowed from secondary sources (acknowledged and especially not acknowledged) will be failed automatically.
    - Because you are expected to use your own English in the exam, any memorized answers will be failed automatically.
  • Evaluación no continua:
Final exam makes 100% of the final mark.

Written exam, in January 2024 on a date and venue pre-assigned by the Faculty, 2 hours, no classnotes, no phones or other digital media allowed.

Particularidades de la convocatoria extraordinaria:
